Inline Hockey New Zealand initiated the NZ Maori Team in 2015 to celebrate and promote NZ Maori players. This pathway has led to opportunities within our sport and combining this through the creation of the Matariki Series in 2022.
The Kaupapa for the wider Matariki series event is about applying the principles of Kaitiakitanga (leadership and accountability), Whakaiti (humility), Whanaungatanga (building relationships) and Manaakitanga (maintaining relationships) in our sport and giving our players, both junior and senior, purpose by bringing them together to forge a new way of how we support our players’ and empower their growth and enthusiasm for inline hockey. Being able to celebrate Te Ao Maori through inline hockey and give our Maori players and their whanau a platform to show who they are is hugely important and provides a pathway to achieving our goals.
